What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)?
SEL is how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
The Dewing School Site Council has been learning about SEL and continues to seek ways to help our children grow their SEL skills to be confident, happy, students and members of the community. The Dewing also has a Social Emotional Learning Leadership Team which meets twice a month, and strives to create a school environment where we can celebrate the uniqueness of each child while teaching them how to be good friends and classmates.
We are using the following as core resources in our learning:
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (https://casel.org/)
Social Emotional Learning in the Classroom by William B. Ribas, PhD * Deborah A. Brady, PhD * Jane Hardin, MEd
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in the Home by William B. Ribas, PhD * Deborah A. Brady, PhD *Jane Hardin, MEd * Elayne Gumlaw, MEd
Our goal: To have a monthly focus on one of the five core competencies of SEL (Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision-Making, Relationship Skills, Social Awareness). Each month we hope to provide a theme-based assembly, resources for parents, resources for families to explore together. Grow with us! Give us feedback; share your own resources; talk and play with your child.
