Wynn PAC Weekly Update
September 5, 2022
Hello Wynn Families,

Welcome back! For those of you new to the school, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Parent Advisory Council (PAC). The PAC is a non-profit organization comprised of parents, guardians, teachers, and other advocates for children enrolled at the Wynn. Its leadership is comprised of at least three Board Members who are voted on at the end of each school year. This year’s Board Members are Debbie Johnson (President), Heather LaCount (Secretary), and John Stanton (Treasurer).

The PAC’s mission is to act as the liaison between parents and staff for the purpose of understanding, communicating, and financially supporting the school’s educational goals. Below are some examples of PAC-sponsored activities:

Fundraising
  • Fall Fundraiser
  • BoxTop for Education
  • Bookfair
  • Food Truck Festival
Community Service/Recycling Efforts
  • Anton’s Cleaners Coats for Kids Drive
  • Tewksbury Food Pantry Collection
  • Recycle That! Collection
Miscellaneous
  • Arts and enrichment programs
  • Technology events
  • Staff appreciation events
  • School beautification projects, i.e., landscaping/planters
  • Staff/administration requests
  • Provide summer reading book to all students
These activities are simply not possible without A LOT of help and support, which is where YOU come in!

We strongly encourage anyone interested in making a positive impact on their child’s experience at the Wynn to (1) join the PAC, (2) volunteer, and/or (3) participate in PAC-sponsored activities.

Generally, PAC meetings are held once every other month starting in September. We are still in the process of finalizing dates and times, but as soon as we do, we will let you know!

In the meantime, below are some important dates and other information to be aware of as you start the new school year:

Waffles will be training in common areas
Message from SRO Hanley and Waffles
Starting the next couple of weeks and until the end of the school year, you might see SRO Hanley and Waffles in high traffic areas during morning arrival, afternoon dismissal, PE classes, and lunches. As part of Waffles’ training, he needs to get used to these high traffic areas and be comfortable while present with his handler. SRO Hanley asks that if you see him and Waffles outside, in the halls, during gym classes and lunches, to just go about your business as usual and let Waffles take in the sights and sounds of these high traffic, noisy areas without being surrounded by his admirers. SRO Hanley feels as though this will let Waffles build the confidence he needs to get acquainted with all kinds of noisy situations without getting overwhelmed in the process.
Waffles will still be walking the hallways and visiting classrooms as usual. This is just another step in the process of his training to get used to unexpected noises and actions. SRO Hanley and Waffles would like to thank all the students and staff at the Wynn for being so good to him and respecting the process of his ongoing training.

Dear Parents and Families:
Did you know that reading 20 minutes a day with your child is the best investment your family can make in their future? Research shows that children who read just 20 minutes per day score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Come to the Book Fair to stock up on the books your child will love reading and ignite your home reading habits.
The Wynn Middle School Scholastic Book Fair will be held March 4-17!  Students will be visiting the Scholastic Book Fair during school hours March 7-11.  Visit the homepage https://www.scholastic.com/bf/jwwynnmiddleschool to set up your students eWallet and general information.

Students who purchase an item from the In Person Book Fair will be put into a drawing for a free Scholastic gift.  We will be giving one gift away for each grade level.  The homeroom teacher with the most book fair participants will also receive a Scholastic gift for their classroom!!
There are 3 ways to shop:

  • Create an account through the eWallet between February 11 and March 11 from the Scholastic link above to deposit money for your student to access during the fair.
  • Send money in with your student.
  • Online shop at https://www.scholastic.com/bf/jwwynnmiddleschool

EMAIL DATED FEBRUARY 10, 2022

Dear TPS Staff and Families,

Thank you all for your continued diligence in addressing the needs of our students during this pandemic.  The recent move to collaborate with DESE regarding At-Home Test Kit distribution to both students and staff has gone well, resulting in almost 1,000 students and over 300 staff opting to take part.  The elimination of contact tracing and “test and stay” as a result of the test kit distribution model has had positive outcomes and reduced the workload of our nurses.  Combined with our regular COVID checks (pooled testing) these efforts are evident in our COVID tracker reaching single digits for the first time in months.

Yesterday, Governor Baker and DESE Commissioner Riley announced that the statewide mask requirement for public schools students and staff will end on February 28, 2022 (DESE Update on Mask Requirement).  TPS has continually followed DESE guidance while taking advantage of intervention opportunities they have provided since the initial days of the pandemic.  We believe this approach has been a key element in supporting the safety of students and staff in mitigating the impact of this virus.   During last night’s School Committee meeting, the School Committee discussed the rescinding of the mask requirement by the State.  Previously, during the August 18, 2021 School Committee meeting, the School Committee voted to start the school year requiring mask wearing for students and staff for 60 days.  Shortly after that vote, the State initiated the mask requirement for all public schools.  It is this statewide mask requirement that the district has been following since that time.

Beginning Monday, February 28, 2022, and in accordance with the removal of the statewide mask requirement for public schools, and in coordination with the Tewksbury Health Department, mask-wearing will be optional for students and staff.  The only two instances where masks will continue to be required due to federal mandates are transportation (school buses) and health care offices (nurse’s office).  Masks will also continue to be recommended for those individuals returning for days 6-10 of COVID-related isolation, those who are symptomatic, and those who are not vaccinated.

Please remember that the following mitigation strategies will remain in place after February 28, 2022:

  • Frequent COVID checks (pooled testing) for those students or staff members who sign up.

  • Distribution of one test kit per week (2 kits distributed every 2 weeks) for students and staff that opt-in for the At-Home test kit distribution.

  • Testing opportunities for symptomatic individuals.

  • Continued messaging regarding the availability of vaccination/booster clinic opportunities for families and staff.

The District will continue to be sensitive and supportive of individuals choosing to continue to wear a mask and encourages respect for the differing opinions of others as we navigate this new change.

Sincerely,

Christopher Malone
Superintendent of Schools

The TMHS PAC met for our January meeting and we have a lot of our great traditional events coming up in this last half of the school year. You may think “why would I want to volunteer with the TMHS PAC when my kids are only at the Elementary or Middle schools?” To be truthful, before you know it your kids will be in high school!! Some of the big events that the TMHS PAC puts on are Applefest(Oct), Trivia Night and the post-graduation safe All Night Long event(June) . Over the past years we have kept detailed informational binders of how these events are run, set-up and broken down; basically, what is needed to put on one of these events. Our current regular PAC attendees are mostly parents of Juniors and Seniors with 2 veteran members of Sophomores. So you see, we will be without much support heading into the 2022-2023 school year and bare bones into the 2023-2024 school year. If anyone is interested in getting involved to help volunteer with our upcoming Trivia Night (May) and All Night Long (June), please feel free to reach out for more information. If you have attended any of these events you know how fun they are!

Winter Bus Message

Our buses continue to reduce COVID-19 transmission risk by opening windows in order to increase outdoor air ventilation . Guidance from DESE includes keeping windows open at least two inches at all times during operation. In adverse weather conditions(cold/snow/rain), every other window can be opened.  We request that families send their students to ride the bus in the appropriate attire to keep them warm and dry.

Late Buses Start February 1

The Wynn Middle School will begin offering a late bus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The bus will arrive at the Wynn at approximately 3:40. Students who finish their activity prior to this time will be supervised by a teacher in a waiting area/classroom. Hats off to the Wynn Student Council for advocating for the reintroduction of late buses at the Wynn! We hope to expand to Thursdays as well when we are able to secure additional staffing.

The Butterfly Project

As part of their study of the Holocaust and The Diary of Anne Frank, last year’s eighth graders participated in The Butterfly Project. Students painted ceramic butterflies each of which was accompanied by a short biography of one of the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust. This project embraces the themes of remembrance of those who were killed and a hope for peace in the world. Over the summer, our teachers installed the butterflies and a quotation from Anne Frank in our lobby across from the library. We recently received a certificate from The Butterfly Project in recognition of our participation and completion of the display. Students completed approximately 250 butterflies. The horrific scale of the Holocaust is underscored by the fact that if our students continued to paint 250 butterflies a year, it would take 6,000 years for them to paint enough to represent the children who were victims of this genocide

TPS will welcome its first comfort dog sometime around Thanksgiving.  One of these cute little pups will be our new comfort pup. Resource officer Hanley has been visiting various boards & committees around town to share information about his new partner. It will be based out of the Wynn Middle School, with SRO Hanley, but will visit all the Tewksbury schools on a rotating schedule, which is to be determined.

Free Breakfast
Students are encouraged to take advantage of our morning breakfast program. Upon entering the building, students who would like breakfast should report to the cafeteria. Breakfast is free this year.

Grade 8: September 28, 6:30-8:30

Open House is a time to hear and see team teachers, specialists, special education teachers, counselors, and administrators to learn about the Wynn Middle School. At this point in the school year, we have taken into consideration the most convenient way for our faculty and staff to share introductions, curriculum and other resources with families and have determined that this year’s Fall Open House will be conducted in the format of virtual presentations. You will be able to access staff over the course of the Open House hours via Google Meet or Zoom. Links and schedules will be provided prior to the Open House dates.  We look forward to having all of you visit and connect virtually with our school community!
